今月に入って、首都ワシントン郊外で、どこかのアホがライフル銃で何の縁もゆかりもない一般市民を１人ずつ狙い撃ちにしている。最初は、またアルカイダなどのテロリストによる仕業かとも思われていたが、こういうのはいかにもアメリカ的な犯罪なので、犯人はおそらくどこかの田舎者の白人の男と断言してもいいだろう。社会のオチこぼれで、「ルーザー」と言われるやつらだ。

今までに10人ほどの被害者がいるらしい。死神が描かれたタロットカードに「警察の者ども、我は神なり」と書いて残してあったこともあるとか。その辺は呆れるほど詳細にマスコミに取り上げられているので、詳しく知りたい人は、cnn.comか何かで「Washington sniper」をキーワードに検索してもらいたい。いくらでも出てくるはずだ。普段は自他共に認める「ニュース・ジャンキー」の私だが、それをさらに上回る「へそ曲がり」なので、犯人がマスコミに取り上げられるのを喜んでいるだろうと思うと、わざと無視して新聞記事も読まないし、テレビもすぐにチャンネルを変えている。それでもそういう事件が起こっているという情報はイヤでも耳に入ってくる。こうやって自分のウェブサイトにスペースを割いてやるのも口惜しいくらいだ。

地元に住む人は、このスナイパーが怖くて、外に出られないとか、出かけたときは子どもにジグザグに走るように言いつけているとか、恐怖に震え上がっているようだが、これも情報氾濫の弊害だと思う。んなもん、いったん遠距離からライフル銃で狙われたら、ジグザグに走ったって避けられるものでなし、ワシントン郊外には何百万もの人が住んでいるんだから、危険度は何百万分の１、そんなことより、交通事故に気をつけろよ、って感じ。私がターゲット地域に住んでいたとしたら「顔を見せろ、卑怯者」と書いたＴシャツでも着て堂々としていると思う。

中には、この騒ぎに自分も関わりたかったのだろう、偽りの目撃情報を警察に話した不届きな輩もいるとか。（結局、つじつまが合わなくなって、バレてからは牢屋に入れられている。じっくり反省してもらいたい。）で、今までわかっているのは、犯人は白いバンを使っているという情報ぐらいで、白いバンなんてそれこそ、その辺にいくらでも走っているから、こんな情報じゃ犯人特定なんてできっこない。

アメリカ社会の一番イヤな部分を見ているようで、気が滅入る。ハリウッド映画にも責任の一端があると思うぞ。だってよくあるじゃない、連続殺人犯とそれを追う刑事の一騎打ち的な映画が。んで、タダの人殺しがヒーローと渡り歩いて、カッコよかったりするわけだ。悪者を演じた役者がアカデミー賞をとってしまったりするわけだ。

もちろん、人が何人も殺されているのだから、調査や報道を全くしないわけにはいかないだろうが、こんなおバカな犯人を捕まえようと躍起になるより、全世界に被害を広げつつあるテロとか、イラク問題、北朝鮮問題、そして翳りの見えてきたアメリカ経済など、もっと大切なことがあるでしょ、と言いたい。

この事件については、このぐらいで止めておこう。犯人が捕まっても捕まらなくても、あまり興味はない。時間とメモリースペースは有意義に使いたい。

　
There’s been a psychotic nut case shooting innocent bystanders one by one with a rifle since the beginning of this month. Initial suspects included Al Queda terrorists, but the m.o. was a classically American one, I guess it’s safe to assume that the perpetrator is a white man from some sticks, some loony loser, Mr. Nobody.

There have been about 10 victims, or so I hear. He even left a tarot card with a grim reaper, challenging to the police to catch him and with an announcement that he was divine, or so I hear. The minutiae of anything surrounding this case is abundant on any news site. For those who are interesting in finding out more should run an Internet search with keywords like “Washington sniper.” As a certified news junkie, I usually can be counted on to know the details about anything newsworthy in the media, but not this one. You see, as ever a contrarian, the more sniper commits the actrocity in search of publicity, the less willing I am to give my attention. But still, I’m subjected to occasional reporting. Even giving him this much space on my web site is more than the spineless sniper deserves.

The locals in the vicinity are said to be terrified to go out, or telling their kids to run zigzag in the parking lot. This is another side effect of too much publicity. I don’t think there’s much one can do to avoid the bullet, once he/she becomes a target of a sharpshooter. And the probability of becoming a target in the whole Washington D.C. area is one in a several million, considering the population. You still are more likely to get hit by a bus. If I were living in the area, I’d probably go about my own business sporting a T-shirt with a bull’s eye that reads: “Show me your cowardly face.”

But because of all the media blitz surrounding the case, there even was an attention-grabbing loser who provided the police with a false eyewitness account. (I hear the sad sack of a liar is in jail right now. It’s a good thing.) All they seem to know is that there might be a white van involved. Now that cuts down the number of possible vehicles to what? A hundred thousand white vans in D.C. area? Oooh, that helps.

This is a part of American culture that really disgusts me. On this issue, I side with the conservatives that the Hollywood had a hand in it. There have been too many movies where a psycho killer goes toe to toe with a hero cop, becoming a formidable enemy, thus basking in the spotlight. There have been too many actors who have been prised for playing this kind of killer.

I don’t mean to make light of the fact that there have been innocent people shot to death for no reason, but there are more pressing issues to spend our precious airtime and article space, such as Iraq, North Korea, sagging U.S. economy and such.

This has been too much of my time already to be spending on such a loser. I don’t care if he’s caught or not. Life is precious, and so is my time and memory space.
